In light of the pressing environmental challenges of our time, Castlery has embarked on a journey alongside our partners and customers to reduce our environmental footprint and create positive change. Join us as we reflect on the initiatives of the year.
To help reduce our greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from ocean freight, we've teamed up with our global logistics partner, Maersk, to incorporate ECO Delivery into our shipping services.
ECO Delivery is an initiative introduced by Maersk that allows companies to opt for a climate-friendly shipping option. Maersk replaces fossil fuels on its ships with green fuels* like green methanol or second-generation biodiesel based on waste feedstocks. The amount of carbon savings is calculated based on the energy used to move the containers, as reported by Maersk and verified by third parties from Smart Freight Centre.
Through this initiative, we have pledged green fuels equivalent to 80% of our current shipping volume, which actively contributes to reducing ocean freight GHG emissions by 5,000 metric tons in a year. This means that when you shop with us, this will support the transition to green fuels and reduce GHG emissions at no extra cost to you.
*Maersk defines ’green fuels’ as fuels with low (65-80%) to very low (80-95%) GHG emissions over their life cycle compared to fossil fuels.
As part of Go Green 2023 - a nationwide movement organised by MSE and STB - we partnered with Pass-It-On to host GREEN-HOUSE 2023 in July, Singapore’s first and largest immersive retail shop-the-house experience.
The goal was to breathe life into the concept of a sustainable urban home, featuring over 70 local sustainable home and lifestyle brands like Slow House and Weavve Home.
GREEN-HOUSE 2023 is the first and largest immersive retail shop-the-house experience in Singapore.
We were delighted to host over 6,000 people over the weekend, helping to raise awareness of sustainable living and supporting the community of local brands.
In collaboration with partners like DBS and Mercedes-Benz, eco-workshops and activities were conducted to educate consumers on embracing a low-carbon footprint lifestyle - such as composting, upcycling, and test-driving Mercedes-Benz EVs.
There was an art installation that featured the artist TANCHEN, named 'Reincarnation', that was made from unwanted materials like faulty Mercedes-Benz seatbelts and returned Castlery products. This added an artistic touch and showcased the beauty of sustainable living.
Art installations featured our returned items and faulty Mercedes-Benz seat belts.
During GREEN-HOUSE 2023, we also teamed up with Tesign and Semula to conduct a giveaway of three limited-edition upcycled case goods made from HDPE recycled packaging waste.
The Mika Side Table and Zane Side Table are made from HDPE recycled packaging waste.
To support more circular consumption, we piloted a new service in Singapore, the Trade-In Programme, that allowed customers to trade in used Castlery furniture that would be donated to a good cause. This encourages customers to give the furniture a second life that positively impacts the community and environment.
We collaborated with local sustainable and social impact organisations to repurpose, recycle, or upcycle the pre-loved Castlery furniture.
As 2023 comes to a close, know that our road to sustainability has not. While we still have a long way to go, we believe that every small step contributes to a greener future - and we’re fully committed to it. The initiatives that we’ve taken in 2023 are a testament to our ongoing dedication to creating a more sustainable, eco-conscious world - one piece of furniture at a time. So join us on this journey towards a greener, more beautiful tomorrow.
